The absolute majority of internet and social media is filled to the brim with marketing,
And so, If you're trying to run some marketing for your business, your first step would be to stick out like a sore thumb... like a sports car on a crowded street.
In this article, I'll show you exactly how to do that.
Boring & Generic Headlines Hurt Your Marketing.
Headlines MUST get attention.
A headline is like whatever you wear to an interview.
Being well dressed would get you the job. Show up with a dirty shirt, and, you’re dead (Unless you are Chris Gardner)
The headline must FORCE prospects to pay attention. It should make them stop scrolling like a robot, and look at your ad.
Because everyone now has the attention span of a sugar-addicted orangutan, you only have a split-second to do this
This means that your headline needs to cut through the clutter and grab their attention by the neck.
How Important Are Headlines?
I remember looking at an ad run by a random carpentry business.
The headline said “Meet X, our senior carpenter”
Well, it doesn’t do anything for a guy blitz-scrolling through Facebook does it?
It doesn’t give the guy a reason to stop and take a look. It doesn’t give the guy a reason to call.
Now guess what happened? All the money thrown into the ad was gone to waste.
If your headline is boring, people don’t do anything. Your ad is lost among millions of others.
You can have the best ad on the planet, the best message, but if the hook is weak, it’s all gone to waste.
When looking at opportunities to improve your marketing, the headline is often one of the easiest things to make you win. And, we MUST take easy wins.
Here’s the catch - Most headlines we see are horrendous and terrible. They’re boring, they look like corporate vomit.
And so, if you JUST stand out using the steps below, you’ll see guaranteed results.
Here’s How You Write A Great Headline.
Now, I got two important checks that you can apply with ANY headline.
These are tests that can be done by anyone, and you do not need to be a genius or an “expert” with 55 degrees and a million dollars in student debt.
So, here are the tests.
Does it pass the “What’s in It For Me” test?
I want you to put yourself into the shoes of a prospect.
Think, “what would they like to read? Would they stop scrolling? Would they give you their attention?”
And often, the answer would be answered by the company themselves. Because, we’re already selling stuff that people buy. So, we can find out easily what people want.
Does it step into the conversation already going on in the prospects’ mind?
If you show your ads and content to the right audience, chances are, they are already thinking about your product/service, without them even knowing.
Algorithms these days absolutely love pushing content to people who already show interest in it.
So, check if your headline can tap into these interests without any difficulty.
Let’s revisit the carpenter ad for the example. Let’s apply these two checks and make the headline win.
The line “Meet X, our lead carpenter” doesn’t pass either of these. First, X is not what prospects want to see, and people interested in carpentry, well, like to see good furniture, or well designed homes.
So how would we fix this?
We’ll rewrite it to something like these - “Furniture guaranteed to make any space beautiful”, or “Make your space impressive with X’s furniture” , or "Get beautiful furniture delivered in less than 2 days"
See how we show something that viewers interested in furniture may actually check out, easy enough to understand, short enough to grab their attention and check your ad out.
And then, we test all these headlines, see what works and what doesn’t.
So, let’s go write headlines that work and create the best marketing to ever exist.
Grab attention, keep it simple and focus on RESULTS.
There’s plenty of ways to do this and it’s doable for every single business, yours included.
